Computer Assisted Learning: A Helpful Approach in Learning English

Computer Assisted Learning:
😊😊A Helpful Approach in Learning English 😀😀

(reference: http://jiabjiab143.blogspot.com/2013/12/)

Nowadays, English has become the common international language in the 21st Century. It is the language most frequently used to communicative by people who are not native speakers of the same language. Consequently, learning and using English is of a great importance. Most of the new methods and theories focus on technology applications and investigate its effect on learning. One of the modern theories in teaching language is constructivism theory which focuses on learning by doing and learning through technology. Technology integration is helpful tool which can be use in the classroom to promote learners’ involvement in learning. Moreover, technology can help learners to be responsible for their own learning by providing an independent learning environment.

Computer Assisted  Language Learning (CALL)
Computer assisted language instruction (CALI), and computer-aided language learning. Call is not a method, but a tool to enable teachers to facilitate language learning process. Learners and teachers can benefit from CALL systems, because they offer learners the chance to practice extra learning material at their convenient time in a stress-free environment.

Technology from the Point of View of Constructivism
There are two major types of constructivism, cognitive social, that can extrapolate with the use technology in the classroom.
-          -Cognitive constructivism refers to the student-centred aspects. Students are not passive recipients of learning; they sonstruct their own knowledge from information received.
-                      -Social constructivism refers to student assistance. More advanced students help other students understand ideas or concepts beyond their baseline level of understanding.
The one who constructs knowledge and meaning, linking incoming or new knowledge and information to existing knowledge.
PBL
It is based on constructivist pedagogy which intends to engage learners in deep learning process with issues and questions thatare rich and relevant to the topic of lesson. PBL offers a specific type of learning in which learners are expected to use technology in meaningful ways to help them investigate, learn or present their knowledge.
Case Study
In the case institute, learners attend English classes 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. As part of learning method in this institute, learners are required to use a computer program within their daily life activities which tests their English skills in different components of language namely reading, writing, conversation, and grammar. The computer program is a self-practice test and allows learners to finish the assignments at their own pace and helps them to improve their skills by making them find the correct answer before being able to proceed to the next skill.

Empirical Study
The perception edof learners on the effects of the provided computer program on improving their English and learning that specific component were investigated. Learners were given a questionnaire at the end of academic semester and were supposed to measure their perception on the effectiveness of the computer program by making it as either “not helpful” or “completely helpful”
Overall, 106 International learners attending the case institute took part in this study by completing the distributed survey.

The Use of Multimedia in English Teaching

😍😍The Use of Multimedia in English Teaching 😋😋

                                      (reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evv1IhFplys)

The Definition of Multimedia
Multimedia is the use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way.
Components of Multimedia
Multimedia is composed of text, graphics, animation, sound, and video.
Text : It is fundamental element in all multimedia application, so teacher can use different font size, color, and style to present information for emphasize a certain word or phrase.
Graphics : Graphics plays a very important role in language teaching process because it can stimulate interesting and motivation, improve understanding ability of language that refers to images and pictures, such as chart, diagram, and photograph, which contain no movement.
Animation : Animation is the rapid display of sequence of image of 2D or 3D artwork. Assisted by the use of animation, teacher can highlight key knowledge points and heighten students' motivation.
Sound : It can use more vivid and fruitful sound to help students’ English learning .
Video : It is the visible part of a television transmission and broadcasts visual image of stationary or moving objects. Compared with animation, video can offer more vivid information. But it will consume more storage space than animation.
The Setting of Multimedia Classroom
         1.MPC : multimedia personal computer
2.VCD/DVD player : video compound disk/digital video disk
         3.Amplifier and Hi-Fi acoustic system
         4.Overhead/slide projector
        5.Screen/curtain
        6.Projecting apparatus
        7.The Internet access
        8.Cassette tape recorder

        9.Camera recorder

The Necessity of Development of Modern Educational Technology

The Necessity of Multimedia in English Teaching

Modern Education Technology can promotes the development and but also promotes the development of educational methods and means but also promotes the development of educational thinking and models. That modern educational technology must lead to development of multi-media teaching. Only multimedia teaching can develop and improve the modern education technology well.

The Needs of Quality Education
The multimedia English language teaching can enable students to be involved in a variety of sensory organ in the learning process and stimulate the students in the corresponding cortical function area and also it can provides a good educational platform and adds vigor for quality education enabling students to change and update their thinking from the traditional teaching,  thereby enhancing the quality of all aspects.

The Needs of Students' Cognitive Mental
The multimedia teaching system can fully mobilize the student and thus get the best of the cognitive effect. Therefore, using multimedia teaching is very necessity, especially in English teaching; only effective co-ordination of multimedia can better complete the teaching task.

The Multimedia Teaching

To using multimedia in classroom, there is both advantage and disadvantage. So, teacher should their students when they find the problems. Those are as followings:

   (reference: https://www.marcodegroen.com/impact-of-multimedia-in-education-for-children-with-special-needs/)

Advantages :
   - Arousing the students' interest.
   - Improving students' self-learning ability.
   - Improving students' innovative ability.
   - Cultivating students' communication skills.
   - Increasing classroom capacity.

Problems
   Confusion
It is the problem that teachers have directly brought at a CD-ROM couseware for student's lesson and just completely ignore the "teaching - centered" teaching thinking, completely change into a multimedia - centered thinking.
Performance on behalf of the lead
The teaching process is that teachers arouse students' enthusiasm and guide students to active learning. Multimedia just only provides a supporting role in the process.
  Lack of Special Skills
The unskilled operation on computer would affect the instruction flow, which in turn would de-motive students if it happened frequently in class.
  Over-use of multimedia
Multimedia have many benefits that can help to teach students but teachers over use multimedia. The teachers act as sole information giver to the students.
Lack of interaction between teachers and students

Strategies for Using Multimedia

Combining Modern Teaching Methods With Traditional Teaching Methods
Teachers should combine their strong points with modern teaching methods, which not only raise classroom teaching quality and efficiency, but also improve teaching and learning environment between teachers and students.

Viewing Multimedia as the Assistance to Teaching
Application of multimedia technology aims to improve teaching, but teaching is not intended for multimedia. There is no doubt that teaching needs multimedia, but using multimedia, but using multimedia does not mean enhancing teaching efficiency. Multimedia can only be used as a supplement to classroom English teaching.

Building the Ideal Relationship Between Teachers and Students.

Strengthening Teachers Training.
Multimedia assisted English teaching requires teachers with multimedia computer operating experience.

The Principles of Multimedia-Assisted Teaching.

1.Scientific principle. Namely, courseware design cannot appear any errors.
2.Subsidiary principle. It is only a supplementary means, and does not substitute for the role of people.
3.Interactivity principle. More interactivity between teachers and students, students and multimedia, more effective results we will have.
4.Combination principle. Combine the advantages of modern teaching and the traditional teaching organically.

Using Corpus Analysis Software to Analyse Specialised Texts

Using Corpus Analysis Software to Analyse Specialised Texts

      1. What is a corpus?

In corpus linguistics, a corpus can be generally defined as… ‘a collection of naturally-occurring texts in a computer-readable format which can be retrieved and analyzed using corpus analysis software’ (Kennedy, 1998; McEnery & Wilson, 2001; O’Keeffe, A., McCarthy, M., & Carter, R. , 2007; Teubert & Cermakova, 2007)

           Corpus size

  •    There are no fixed ruled; depending on research purposes, availability of data and time.
  •     Large, general corpora may be less useful than small, focused corpora if searches are made on context-specific terms.
  •    There are limitations of ‘too small’ corpora e.g. not enough concepts, terms, or patterns under investigation.
  •      It is preferable to create a ‘monitor’ or ‘open’ corpus because specialized words/usage are dynamic.

Text extracts vs. full texts

  •      Depends on the aim of corpus compilation.
  •     Whole text offers more coverage because words or terms to be looked at may be randomly distributed throughout the text.
  •     Specific sections may be helpful if we are looking for words or phrase under particular content areas or want to create purposeful sub-corpora.

Number of texts

  •     Choices can be made between collect few texts of large size or a number of texts with smaller sizes.
  •       Choices can also be made between selecting texts written by one or two key writers or sources, or texts retrieved from different sources or written by different authors.
  •      Depends on your research focus e.g. to study overall language use or to study idiosyncrasy or linguistic choices preferred by particular writers.

Medium

  •         Can be spoken or written texts or mixed.
  •       Depends on research questions.
  •       Some practical factors should also be considered e.g. compiling spoken corpora can be time-consuming and needs special types of tagging.

Subject and text type

  •      Should mainly focus on the specialized text under investigation, although this is less clear-cut in multidisciplinary subjects.
  •     Texts may come from different subject if the research focus is on the study of particular language features rather than term extraction.
  •    Text types within a specialized subject field may vary from ‘expert-to-expert’ texts to ‘expert-to-non-expert’ texts, or in other words, from technical to popular texts.

Other considerations

  •         Authorship: Texts written by experts in a field tend to present more reliable and authentic examples of specialized language.
  • ·     Language: Specialized texts can be stored and retrieved in the form of monolingual, comparable, or parallel corpora.
  •       Publication date: Texts should come from recent publications unless queries are made in relation to particular periods of time.

      4.     Sources of specialized texts

·Printed materials

· Word document

· CD-ROMs

· Texts on the Web

· Online databases
